Military Spending

Both Republicans and Democrats believe that we need to have a powerful military to protect this great land.

They disagree on exactly how large our military needs to be and how much and where the money in the military budget should be spent.

These, I believe, are how the parties stand on this issue in general. There will always be individuals who don't agree with everything their party professes.

Republicans

Republicans want a stronger military, more soldiers, more nuclear missiles, and increased military spending. They support having a large army at the ready incase provoked. They hope that having a large and intimidating army will discourage others from thinking about provoking us.

Democrats

Democrats want a strong, but smaller military. They prefer to work through diplomacy and consensus with our allies. Since we currently spend more than the next highest 7 counties combined (including China and Russia), Democrats believe we should decrease military spending to more rational levels. Military spending currently makes up 1/2 of our discretionary spending. Democrats want a smaller, better equipped and better paid military, and a large supply of well funded, well protected diplomats. They believe we need to be less willing to go to war.

Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security

Medicare pays for health insurance to the elderly. People pay into Medicare during their working years, and when they are retired, they get affordable health insurance through Medicare.

Medicaid provides health insurance to the poor and disabled (in most cases.)

Social Security pays retired people a small stipend every month to live on. People pay into Social Security during their working years, and when they retire, they get a fixed, automatic monthly payment from Social Security.

These, I believe, are how the parties stand on this issue in general. There will always be individuals who don't agree with everything their party professes.

Republicans

Conservative Republicans believe that Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security benefits need to be minimized or done away with all together. They are afraid that the government will run out of money to pay these benefits. They believe that programs like these take money from hard working people and give it to lazy people. Moderate Republicans want to see these programs continued, but never expanded.

Democrats

Democrats believe that these programs are vital to the poor and elderly and need to be bolstered and benefits increased to help the working and non-working poor, elderly, and disabled people not only to keep up with inflation, but also so they can live decent lives instead of just scraping by all of the time. They know that the Social Security program has been and is running at a surplus, and reigning in the excessive inflation in healthcare is the key to making Medicare stable in the long run. Democrats think it is unconscionable that we would spend hundreds of billions of dollars on Military spending while we still have so many people in abject poverty and homelessness. Plus, lifting people out of poverty would be a great boost to our economy and is the morally right thing to do.
